A very pressing question for many users is how to recover a damaged Word document, or how. I think everyone has had such a problem as losing a document. For example, you were typing something important in the program, a crash occurred, Microsoft Word crashed (closed), and after opening you find nothing, or the document does not open at all. To prevent this from happening in the future, I have prepared an article where I will show what you can use to restore a damaged version of a document.

How to recover a damaged Word document?

Let's say you tried to run a document file and saw the following error message.

This error already contains several recommendations from which you can understand what to do, for example, make sure that there is enough disk space, whether you have permission to use the document and edit it.

In this case, we can return the document using Word itself. Just open the icon of this program so that Word starts, and then go to the item on the left "Open" and select "Review".

In the explorer that opens, look for the document you want to open, click on it once so that its name appears in the field "File name". Next, you select the item from the drop-down menu "Recover text from any file" and click “Open”.

If the document is very large and you have used many design styles, it is not always successfully restored. Sometimes part of the text disappears, or there is text, but without formatting styles. The main thing, of course, is to restore the integrity of the document.

How to recover a Word document [Second method]

From what has been said above, it is clear that the first method does not always help, although it is worth using it. Let's move on to the next method.

Open Microsoft Word again and go to the File menu, then “Open” and the button "Review". Find the damaged document and click on it. Then click on the arrow where the “Open” button is and select the option there "Open and restore".

How to restore a Word backup?

Sometimes a file may get lost and you cannot find it anywhere. In this case, the program usually creates backup copies of the document; to open it, you need to proceed as follows:

Open Word and go to the “Open” section, then click on “Browse”. Remember where you saved the document and go to that folder. In the pop-up tab, select "All files", look for the lost document. Focus on the name and date. Sometimes such a document may be called “Backup copy...”.

If you fail, you can go another way. Open the search field in Windows and enter the extension of the Word backup file - *.wbk. It is more likely that such a file will be opened, but the point is that there may be more than one and the names may not match, so you will have to open and look at each one.

Autosave in Word, or how to restore a saved copy of a document

Typically, the program automatically creates backup copies of the document after a certain period of time. They are usually found along the following path: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word.

Autosaved document names can begin with the word "Autocopy...", and the format of such files will be *.asd. To open such a file, you need to double-click on it.

Bonus option – Word file recovery program

I myself have never been interested in third-party Word recovery programs, but they can help if none of the above methods worked. As an example, I can cite the Hetman Office Recovery program. The utility, unfortunately, is paid; perhaps there are analogues, which I will include in this article. To use Hetman Office Recovery, just install it on your computer and check the disk for lost and damaged documents.

The program will find documents and show them in its window with real names. If you want to restore something, you select them with ticks, then it’s a matter of little things.

How to find the file you need on your computer? There is so much information on my computer, but I can’t find what I need. It seems that all the time I try to sort all the files into folders, but I still don’t remember where everything is. Sometimes such evil takes over... I urgently need a file, and I know that I have it, but I don’t know where. But often I still don’t remember what this file is called. Common situation?

First, we need to open the search window. I’ll immediately make a reservation that the described method is not suitable for Windows 7, since everything is so simple there. You go into the explorer and search.

And in Windows XPThere are three ways to open the search window.

  • Method 1. Open the folder My computer ;
  • Method 2. Press the keys on the keyboard Windows+F ;
  • Method 3. Open StartFindFiles and folders ;

Click the button Search on the toolbar;

Select Files and folders ;

If you remember at least one word from the file name, then enter this word in the first and second search boxes. If you remember exactly one word (if several words are even better) inside the file, then write it in the second window.

I don’t remember anything except the word “earnings” from this file.

Below in the field Search in: indicate which disk to search on. If you only have one hard drive, you don't have to specify anything.

Even lower, you can open an additional search using the double arrow;

In it you can indicate the approximate date (when you last opened it) of the file, and its size (well, you probably don’t remember this);

In additional options, you can specify the File Type (PDF, Word, Excel, etc.) if you remember it.

Click the button Search and wait.

This is what my dog found.

If you put a question mark in a word instead of a letter, the search will be slightly different. This sign indicates that any other letter can be used instead.

If you put an asterisk at the beginning or end of a word ( * ), then the search will be based on the word that you wrote, but at the same time files will be found with some word in front (if the asterisk is at the beginning of the word) or behind (if you put an asterisk at the end of the word).

Something bad happened and you lost your files. Let's first try to narrow down the range of possible causes and make a diagnosis. And then, if possible, solve the problem.

First you need to understand why the need to restore them arose. This could be a human factor, when you yourself accidentally deleted files or “cleaned” a disk or flash drive with a quick format. Or they even tried to incorrectly redistribute the hard drive space using Disk Utility or iPartition in the presence of Bootcump and two installed Mac OS X and Windows systems.

Data may also be partially lost due to program failures, power surges, or incorrect handling of your Mac. For example, you accidentally turned off your computer while running and the file structure was damaged.

A completely different situation is when you accidentally dropped a disk on the floor, and after that it “knocking”, which means the spindle bearing is jammed or the magnetic heads are out of order. In this case, it is better to contact a specialized data recovery center, which will cost several thousand rubles.

We will talk, first of all, about files deleted after emptying the Recycle Bin (except for Secure Epmpty Trash - safe mode), because it is quite possible to restore them - “traces” remain on the disk.

Using Time Machine

Connect your backup drive and launch Time Machine. You will see reservation windows. To get to the desired moment in the “past”, use the time scale. If you don't know the exact date the file was deleted, scroll to the back arrow. Just click on it, and Time Machine will automatically show the date it was last modified. Or use Spotlight in the search field of Time Machine's Finder window. Enter the data in this window and click the same “back” arrow. Time Machine itself will find your file among the backups. Now click the "recover" button and the lost file will be automatically copied to your desktop or to a folder you specify.

But a situation may arise when the disk or the system itself is so damaged that Time Machine cannot read the data. Then other utilities will come to the rescue.

Using recovery utilities

From Prosoft Engineering. Thanks to its algorithm, it is a unique program for recovering deleted files or data from problematic media. Data Rescue is safe because it does not try to recover the disk itself, but only tries to “rip out” all possible files. It is distinguished by a simple and user-friendly interface, visual effects, a preview function, the ability to pause scanning and an expanded list of recognized file types.
Data Rescue allows you to recover data even from digital cameras and music players.

Let's say you accidentally erased your favorite song: “Cheerleader” in .mp3 format. Launch Data Rescue and click Start New Scan.

Select the drive to scan from which our file or its partition was deleted (Select Drive or Volume), and click Next.

Then we assign the scanning mode. Simply click on the appropriate button in the main window. A good place to start is with the Quick Scan Directory. Click on Start.

The program will ask for a folder to save the scan results (Choose a workspace). We choose and say Choose.

Run the Start Now process and wait for the results. (You can pause or cancel this procedure on the go.)

But the song was never found, and a full scan had to be done to get good results.

Select the Deleted File Scan mode and click on Start.

The search procedure this time took a full five hours, since I did not remember where exactly this file was stored on the disk.

We look through the results and look for our “Cheerleader”.
Data Rescue can distribute them by type in separate folders and puts them into separate folders: images (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIFF), video (Quicktime, MPEG-1), audio (MP3, AAC/M4A) and text (Generic ASCII text , RTF, XML, PLIST, Postscript (non-binary). Find our song Audio/MP3/Cheerleader.mp3 in the folder Reconstructed files/Reconstructed file images

Check the box next to it and select Destination for Recovery and click Recover.

We copy the file back to the desired directory, launch iTunes and enjoy your favorite song.

Of course, Data Rescue has many more “subtle features”, but it completed our specific task honestly. The price of the program varies from $99 for the regular version to $249 for the Pro version. And she's worth it.

From R-tools Technology Inc. It can also restore “dead” files.

R-Studio helps you recover data even if the disks have been formatted. “Views” the contents of files to assess the chances of recovery. It will be able to “deal” with NTFS partitioning (Windows) if you have Bootcump installed and you use both systems or if your external drive is formatted so that it can be connected to a Mac and PC at the same time. Instructions for setting up the use of R-Studio are included with the installation image. The price of the utility is $79.99.

From the developer Cleverfiles.

Like R-Studio, it recovers files from Mac/PC file systems (HFS/HFS+, FAT, NTFS). Similar to Data Rescue, it works in three scanning modes: search for deleted files, quick scan and full scan with detailed disk scan. The utility is free and its settings are also simple.

Unbunder from Yazsoft.

Lost file recovery programs are indispensable. Is it possible to make files “magically” appear back in the trash even after deletion? This is where Unblunder comes in handy. It is enough to install the utility and declare it as the starting one in the system user settings of your Mac. Now in the Protect Unblunder menu, double-click to set the parameters for storing information on your disks.

By default, there is a five-minute recovery interval for files larger than 250 megabytes. Smaller data can be recovered within one day.

But we will change the parameters, for example, we will leave Keep items larger than 250 MB, and increase the time from 5 minutes to 10. And we will say to store them not a day, but an hour (one hour). Click Save.

Now, after starting your Mac, a magic wand icon will appear in the menu bar. Just click on it, select Recover Deleted Items and in the window that appears, double-click on the name of the deleted file.

The erased file will appear in the trash again and all you have to do is remove it from there.
Unblunder's price is $10.

So never lose hope. And don't forget to back up files that are dear to your heart.

After understanding the extension of the lost file, for example, “.zip”, all that remains is to enter it in the “Search” field and press Enter. A search on your computer will immediately display a list of files with this extension. From them we already select the one we need.

Rules for searching files on a computer by size

Many users may object - video files can have many extensions, what should you do to search in this case? One of our clients once lost a missing film and asked for advice on this issue.

We noticed that on the user’s computer all films were in the “.avi” format. It would seem that you just need to enter the extension into the search, and everything will work out right away. But not everything turned out to be not so simple; finding the file on the computer was not so easy. Therefore, it was decided to search for the required file by size.

The client's total video files were approximately 1.45 GB in size. Therefore, it was quite reasonable to assume that the lost file had a similar size. Consequently, it was enough to perform a simple procedure System.Size:>1000MB to search the computer memory for files larger than 1 GB.

Based on the search results, a list of 20 video files appeared, including a file without an extension at all. But just by the title itself one could guess that this was exactly the missing film. All that remained was to add the “.avi” extension to the file – and again you could enjoy watching the video. Later we managed to understand that our client’s acquaintances were just making a joke and removed the extension.

How to find hidden files in Windows OS

Sometimes Windows assigns the “Hidden” attribute to some files as a result of virus attacks or a system failure. Because of this, files cannot be seen or found even through “Search”, unless the “Show hidden files and folders” checkbox is checked. Although nothing will happen to the files themselves.

To make hidden files visible, open the “Control Panel”, then go to “Folder Options” - “View”. Next to the “Show hidden files and folders” item, check the box and click OK. After this, sometimes the lost file is immediately found on the desktop. Or you can find it by searching by extension or name, as we discussed earlier.

Search files by their content

For example, if you lose text documents from Microsoft Office Word, Notepad, OpenOffice or other programs. When working with text, some of the content is still stored in the user’s memory. Therefore, in the search, enter part of the text, press Enter and find the desired document.

Although you should keep in mind that on an old and slow computer, the search process may take a long time. Upgrading your PC is something you can think about while you wait for the results.

Total Commander for easy search of necessary files

A popular and convenient file manager that allows you to quickly search for files on your computer using several parameters simultaneously - extension, name, content. To do this, you need to set the search location in the program (for example, C:), then go to “Commands” and “Search files” (or press the hotkey combination Alt+F7).

If you notice an error, select a piece of text and press Ctrl+Enter
