I hate to fish, because I feel sorry for the wasted time. But, nevertheless, I've been preparing for fishing all week. The task was set to catch the mobile Internet and additional risks of the received signal level on the screen of a cell phone or smartphone, and it was necessary to catch it in the field without active amplifiers and batteries. This can be done with a passive repeater.

It probably already happened that in order to look at something on the Internet or call a cell phone, you almost had to climb onto the roof or hang halfway out of the window, catching the risk on the cell phone screen or stuffing S MS-ku to throw phone up, or raise along with the flag on the flagpole.


Try to make the simplest passive repeater of a 3G signal or a cell phone first. Two simple directional wire antennas, a coaxial cable connecting them, that's the whole design. Using such a simple mobile device that does not require power, you can provide communication in the basement, in a metal hangar or garage, in a de-energized bomb shelter, or anywhere else where a cellular signal does not reach.

The size of the antennas themselves will correspond to the selected communication frequency: for a cell phone, frequencies are 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz, for mobile Internet about 2 GHz. For the experiment, I made a 900 MHz antenna, but in practice it turned out to be also workable from 1.8 to 2 GHz. Subsequent measurements of a homemade antenna showed that the range of its excellent matching almost reached 2.080 GHz, otherwise I would not have received a 3G Internet signal.

If someone has already assembled from two wire rings, he can easily cope with the task. Everything is done in the same way.


The diameter of the mandrel (glasses) is 4.3 cm. The frequency is 1.9 - 2.2 GHz.

We determine the wavelength in meters L m = 300 / 900 MHz = 0.33 m

Wire coil (ring) diameter D = L / 3.14 = 0.33 / 3.14 = 0.106 (m)

Distance between rings S = L / 4 = 0.33 / 4 = 0.08 (m)

Accordingly, with increasing frequency - the frames will decrease in size, the losses in the coaxial cable will increase. Antennas at other frequencies will also be calculated.

How it works. One directional antenna, taken out of an absorbing reinforced concrete wall or raised above the metal roof of a country house, or simply raised above the ground, is oriented towards the base station. The second antenna, whether it is a basement, a country house, should be directed to a mobile phone or smartphone or be located next to them.

Since the antenna is directional, it has a gain, in a particular case, equal to 5 dB. Some of this gain will be lost in the cable. In the cable PK 75 - 3. 7-35, 6 meters long at a frequency of 900 MHz, I lost, as it turned out later, 3 dB, which, given the error, coincides with the technical characteristics of the feeder used. Antenna efficiency in free space with increasing height is better. It induced more field strength and improved line-of-sight with the base station, providing a stable connection, since houses and trees are no longer an obstacle to radio waves.

If you need to use several frequencies, you will need several repeaters with different ring diameters. Here, as in fishing, you need all kinds of bait, so I prepared gear like an avid angler, bending the wires like hooks of different diameters. Everything will depend on the conditions. Let's see what we can catch.


Place of testing.

It remains only to try. Here is the place of fishing, the old gazebo. A rod made of a miraculously preserved shortened antenna mast, which saved me when I was flying from the roof, and therefore I definitely won’t climb a tree, at my age the bones do not grow together well. The pole was extended with plastic tubes, in which low-voltage wires are usually laid. Even a wooden bead was used, because the antenna itself weighs little. Turning the fishing rod, I orient the rings towards the nearest town, temporarily turning into a fox hunter. Next to the antenna rings, which is below, I put my mobile phone.

With the help of a repeater, the mobile phone added three risks on the display, providing 100% communication with the nearest civilization (base station), located 6 kilometers beyond the forest. For those who like to chat for a long time on a cell phone outside the city, such a device is simply necessary. As a rule, far from the base stations, the phone gives out full power, which is unhealthy. The correct phone (meaning a small SAR value - sanitary standard), having a good connection with the base station, will give less power to the antenna, which means that the body will be less irradiated by the microwave field. But I already talked about this in the article.

By evening, there are more and more people who want to check their mobile phones and smartphones. Here the tablet came to life, slowly loading, showing individual pictures of television programs. The smartphone began to flip through the pages of the DED CLUB .... We moved a few meters away from the repeater, but the pages of the Internet continue to turn over.

I, offended, fill up my fishing rod on the ground. From the dissatisfied faces, it is clear that everything is frozen, dashes and symbols have flown off the displays.

Only the diameter of the mug (900 MHz) was tested, the diameter of the glasses is still ahead (2-2.2 GHz). Well, the bait on the spiral antenna will complete the catch , I foresee in advance that a heavy structure will turn out, but for a hospital that's what you need.

Yes, by the way about polarization. In a hurry, or maybe out of absent-mindedness, I completely forgot about it, and when I looked at the photographs, I remembered. Base mobile stations of cellular communication have antennas with vertical polarization, and therefore the tackle on the fishing rod had to be rotated 90 degrees, so that the section of the rings was not at the bottom, but on the side, which corresponded to a similar polarization. Nevertheless, the radio signal was able to catch even with the horizontal polarization of the rings on the mast, despite the minimum loss of 6 dB due to mismatches, the experiment was a success. And on the other hand, the forest has its own laws and the passage of a signal with horizontal polarization is better in it.

Two years have passed. This summer, in 2016, I was preparing for the arrival of my grandchildren on vacation from their parents or vice versa, and decided to install digital television in the gazebo, watch cartoons, and even to catch my breath. So that the antenna would not be conspicuous, I wove it from wires and called it an invisible antenna. It turned out four rings, which, when receiving digital television, proved to be better than a two-ring design. I wrote in detail about this design in the article.

I wove similar two antennas for a passive mobile communication repeater for the 900 MHz band, just in case, suddenly someone needs the Internet. As of today, there is no Internet in our lowlands. The first thing to start with is to make sure that all connections are intact. The power adapter and antennas are connected to the high-frequency connectors. If power surges occur frequently in the network, then a surge protector must be used.

The next step is to adjust the gain. It must be at least 15 dB. The repeater can be configured manually or automatically. In the first case, the adjustment is carried out using the potentiometer knob and changing the position of the external and internal antennas.

As a result, I came to the conclusion that the most affordable option is mobile communications and the Internet, which is present in the basic configuration of any tariff of any mobile operator. In the electronics market, I was advised to buy GSM signal booster.

The GSM signal amplifier consists of an external antenna, a cable from the antenna and an internal translator unit.

Almost all the samples on the market are similar in terms of their work, I found differences only in the level of signal increase, size and, of course, budget.

The principle of operation of these installations is simple - an antenna aimed at a more or less confident signal collects a beam of waves from the nearest cellular repeater. And, increasing the signal strength, transmits it to mobile devices.

According to the descriptions, all amplifiers operate within a radius of 10-15 m from the installation site and can provide reception to 5-7 devices simultaneously. To put it simply, a cellular amplifier is your personal repeater in your home.

Having bought one of these amplifiers (I chose one of the budget options) and seeing that in the installation you only need to put an external antenna and plug the amplifier into a power outlet, I set to work.

Installation with slow and careful work (without drilling walls and laying in cable channels) took us about 45 minutes, but ... After many attempts, we could not catch a relatively good signal.

I had to install a free program on my smartphone that measures readings and signal strength. With her, everything became simple and clear: point the phone in any direction - and analyze. Is there a signal? Point the antenna and check the level near the amplifier block.

Now let's talk about the results. Standard in our area, the phone received 3 towers with a maximum indicator of -109 (red sector). After turning on the block, the phone showed 6 towers with a level of -69 (in the green sector). To put it simply, the signal level from 0-1 reception divisions (out of 5) became confidently 5 out of 5.

Perhaps someone will say: Why all this, because you need to relax in nature? But more than half of our dacha neighbors are interested in this issue.

As for costs, my installation costs an average of 5 to 7 thousand rubles. This is a Russian development, there are more expensive ones, but, according to reviews, they do not work much better. In my opinion, it is better to put a more or less average amplifier unit, but the antenna is larger, not 30 cm, like mine, but from 50 cm and more.

The basic principle of its operation is the separation of data streams by time and frequency (TDMA and FDMA, respectively).

Gradually, 2G, including GSM, is being replaced by new generations of mobile networks - 3G and 4G. An innovation introduced by AP networks is the use of separation of information flows by code. Simply put, each subscriber receives a code that goes to the operator's server, which, in turn, transmits the required data streams in the opposite direction.

Data in all cases means both voice or text information, and, say, codes of Internet resources.

Most likely, in order to improve the quality of mobile communications in the country, you will have to deal with GSM. Please note that you will not be able to catch 2G and 3G at the same time with the same equipment. If you definitely need the Internet, it is better to pay attention to 3G. And do not forget that not all phones support new generations of mobile networks, while GSM has been and remains the standard for all phones.

Theoretically, the signal from the base stations should extend to a distance of up to 35 kilometers outside the city. In practice, this is not always the case - the signal can be reflected from hills, tall trees, various metal or reinforced concrete structures. Each time, reflected from the next obstacle, the signal loses power. Thus, white spots appear on the maps of mobile reception areas. Cellular operators usually try to solve this problem by installing additional base stations or strengthening some station already deployed in the area.

Don't rush to pay

Preliminary study the coverage map of different operators. It may turn out that your current operator does not cover this area well, while the connection will be excellent with another. In this case, it will be both more economical and less laborious to switch to it. If this option is not suitable, then strengthening the connection comes into play.

So, what will you need to purchase to amplify the mobile signal? Firstly, these are external and internal antennas. Secondly, you definitely need a repeater - a signal amplifier that transfers the signal from the external to the internal antenna. The external antenna is connected to the repeater via a 5D-FB coaxial cable - this cable provides a significant reduction in losses and good signal shielding when transmitting a signal in the required frequency ranges.

The cable must be connected using an N111/5D plug. It should be noted that one repeater, if your dacha occupies a large area, will not be enough for reliable signal reception throughout the entire area. Then, most likely, you will have to install a few more repeaters. When choosing equipment, be sure to correlate its characteristics with the frequencies at which your network operates and with the desired effect: pay attention to the declared output power and signal gain.

Before installing the equipment, you need to find out where the nearest base station is located. This can be done at the operator's offices or on the Internet. Pre-explore the space of your cottage. The antenna should be directed towards the base station from which you receive a signal.

Mounting hardware is usually included. An outdoor antenna is usually attached to a wall or roof with anchors. If trees grow around the cottage, tall buildings or hills are located, it is advisable to mount the antenna on the mast. The repeater, whose location should ideally coincide with the approximate center of the room, is attached to the inner wall of the building using dowel-nails (there must be a separate outlet nearby to power it).

The repeater is connected by a cable to the internal and external antennas. After that, the repeater must be tuned to the network frequency. There is nothing complicated in the matter of installation and configuration, but if the connection is not made correctly, you risk even more significant deterioration in communication.

I must say that mobile communication amplification systems are an inexpensive thing, but many of our fellow citizens cannot always afford it. In order not to overpay, always measure your needs with one or another means of amplification - do you need an expensive multi-repeater system?

There are also situations that even installing additional equipment for receiving a signal does not solve the problem. If you have a lot of neighbors in the country, whose mobile catches just as badly, then it is rational to contact the mobile operator together. More than once there have been situations when, in such circumstances, the operator, at his own expense, with the involvement of specialists from his technical departments, solved this problem by installing a new base station or strengthening an existing one. The more people who apply, the higher the chances that the appeal will be heard!
