Computers and modern gadgets

If your computer is already quite old, generally 5-10 years old or even more, then there is a high probability that it will no longer work with the same performance that it produced at the time of purchase. It is quite possible that he has become very slow and the whole process of working behind him will only irritate you and you will regularly swear to yourself and say “Damn! Yes, it's frozen again!!! Got it!” at that moment when you need to do something quickly and suddenly the system freezes... Or just one simple action (for example, opening a text document from the desktop) will take you about a minute or two, while it should take away from force 5 seconds. And the most unpleasant thing is the sudden termination of any program where you have been doing work for a long time without saving, as a result of which you lose everything you managed to do!

What is the reason? There can be many reasons. But in general terms, all of the above is united by the fact that your computer is already old or has simply not been maintained in any way for a very long time: it has not been cleaned of dust, the thermal paste has not been changed, it has not been checked for viruses, errors on the hard drive have not been corrected, and it has not yet been performed. a number of regular maintenance tasks.

Therefore, in this article I will tell you, based on my experience (more than 4 years) in the IT field, what you can try to do to return your old computer, which may not have been serviced for a year or more, to more or less normal performance!

Well, firstly, if the computer is already more than 5 years old, then I can say with confidence that it’s time to update it :) Upgrading an old computer (i.e., replacing components with new ones), in principle, is generally pointless. Because if we replace, for example, the motherboard, you will also have to change the processor, because the old processor will no longer fit the modern board. Next, you will have to change the RAM, since it may also not fit your modern motherboard. For example, 4 years ago, DDR2 memory was actively used, now DDR3 and even DDR4! Each of them is not backward compatible with older boards, which means that you will not be able to connect older type RAM modules to a new motherboard and vice versa.

You can read more about the purpose of all computer components in the article:

You will also probably have to replace the power supply with a more powerful one and ultimately, in this way, it may even come to replacing even the hard drive and CD/DVD drive, in some cases (if your drive is very old and is connected to the board via IDE connector) :) It turns out that upgrading old computers is useless!

Therefore, if you have had a computer for 5 years or more, buying a new modern computer would be an excellent option. I have already written a number of articles on the blog about how to choose a computer. You can choose it by individual components, or completely assembled, and even with an installed operating system, which will be a good option for beginners.

However, buying a good modern computer to replace an old and slow one is, of course, expensive. You can buy a computer for work and study for 15,000 rubles, but the price of a good high-performance computer for gaming and working with “heavy” programs (for example, professional graphics, video editors) will already be around 50,000 rubles, if not more.... And the money to periodically replace an old computer with a new one so that there are no slowdowns, and just to keep up with the times, not everyone has it.

And, of course, there are options to speed up your old computer so that it works at least a little differently and is not annoying as before :)

What can you do to speed up your old computer?

I want to say right away that the concept of “Speed up a computer” will not include overclocking its various components, for example, increasing the processor frequency. Overclocking computer components always involves some risk because you could damage the component!

I don’t think this is a useful or necessary idea for beginners. You could consider this option if you no longer care what happens to your computer, and you are ready to take a risk :)

But here’s what I propose to do in order to at least somehow try to speed up your low-performance old computer:

    Cleaning the system unit (case) from accumulated dust. If the computer has been used for a very long time, for example, more than a year, then most likely a lot of dust has already accumulated inside the case. It is especially important that dust accumulates not only in the case itself, but also in the processor and video adapter fans, as a result of which they can begin to overheat. And if the processor overheats, its performance can drop significantly.

    Personally, this happened to me when they bought me my first computer and I had, one might say, no experience at all in servicing it. I was afraid not only to clean the case myself, but even just to open it :) I even remember that at that time the processor cooler was so clogged with dust that the computer began to turn off due to overheating and we took it to service.

    So, if you have been working on a computer for a long time and have never cleaned it inside the case, then I would, first of all, look under the cover of the system unit and assess the degree of dustiness :)

    As a rule, if the computer has been used for a long time, the fans will definitely be clogged with dust, which needs to be removed from them! How to do it? There are actually a lot of options, depending on who can think of what. But first of all, you need to disconnect the cooler itself from the motherboard (if we take the example of a cooler for cooling the processor). Once the cooler is disconnected, it will become much more convenient to clean it. To do this, the best way, in my opinion, is to use a special can of compressed air. This can can easily knock out dust and pieces of dirt from hard-to-reach places with a very strong jet of air. Here's what it looks like:

    There are many companies producing such cylinders, and the price can vary anywhere from 400 to 1000 rubles (based on Moscow prices), depending on the capacity and manufacturer. I regularly use these cans to clean my computers, it’s convenient! Otherwise, you have to remove dust from the fan using improvised means, for example, a toothpick :)

    Having cleaned all the fans (on the processor, on the video card, on the walls of the case, if any), you should clean the entire computer case. If there is no compressed air, then you can use a simple vacuum cleaner with the smallest attachment.

    Don’t forget that this whole procedure applies not only to desktop computers, but also to laptops! Laptops also become clogged with dust, and sometimes even much more so. They are much more difficult to disassemble in order to properly clean. Beginners may not even take on this task, because disassembling it is still okay, but then assembling this laptop and not forgetting to connect and screw anything in – it may not always be possible right away even for a person with experience. If you need to clean your laptop, it would be very good to have disassembly instructions for your specific model. Without instructions, you can make a lot of mistakes: you don’t connect something, you connect it incorrectly, you break it off. You need to look for instructions on the Internet, because no one ever provides them with the laptop. It is enough to indicate something like this in a Google search: “asusn75s disassembly instructions.” In this case, “asusn75s” is the manufacturer and model of the laptop that you are changing, respectively, to your own.

    And after the computer is cleaned of dust, you can move on to the next step...

    Replacing thermal paste between the processor and the cooling system (radiator and cooler). If you begin to notice that the computer is running slower, then you should pay attention to the temperature of the processor and if it is higher than the permissible values (about 70 degrees or more under load), then there are most likely problems with cooling. You can check the temperature using various programs, for example Aida64 and CPU-Z, and also check the temperature in the BIOS.

    Read about what BIOS is and why it is needed in the article:

    And the first thing that comes to mind in this case is that the fan above the processor is not working or the thermal paste has dried out. With the fan, I think everything is clear. Firstly, the BIOS subsystems of modern motherboards can often signal a non-working fan. Secondly, you can simply turn on the computer in a semi-disassembled state and check if the fan is working. If suddenly the fan does not work, then we buy a new one! :)

    If all the fans are working properly, then it may be due to dried out thermal paste. Thermal paste is a special substance that conducts heat from a cooled device to a device that removes this heat. By cooling device we mean the processor, and the device that removes heat is the radiator and cooler. Thermal paste is spread on the processor and only then the cooler is put on top of it! If thermal paste is not applied, the processor will overheat very much and, probably, the computer simply will not turn on, or will constantly turn off due to overheating.

    This point can even be called a continuation of the previous one, because if you removed the processor cooler to clean it from dust, then you definitely need to apply a new layer of thermal paste to the processor, completely removing the old one. And even if there is simply nothing to clean from dust in the computer, and your processor overheats, given that the fans are all in working order, then it’s time to replace the thermal paste with new one. And in general, if the computer has been running for a couple of years and during this time the thermal paste has never been changed, then it would be time to replace it.

    Thermal paste can be purchased at any computer store, and it is usually sold in special syringes or tubes:

    There are many manufacturers of thermal pastes and each has its own taste. Opinions are very divided. For example, I like thermal paste from Zalman, Arctic. Sometimes I take KPT-8 as an alternative.

    Before applying new thermal paste, be sure to wipe off all the old thermal paste to leave a shiny CPU surface! To remove dry thermal paste from the surface of the processor, you can use a thin flat screwdriver, and when the main layer is removed, you can wipe off the residue with ordinary napkins. The main thing is to clean everything thoroughly!

    Then you should apply new thermal paste, and here some people are very overzealous. You should apply only a small amount of thermal paste, the size of 2-3 match heads! Then the thermal paste should be evenly distributed over the entire central area of the processor surface in a very thin layer, using some flat tool or, for example, an unnecessary plastic card for this purpose :) As a result, the thermal paste should be applied in such a way that the heatsink fits tightly to the processor when attached , and the thermal paste only filled the unevenness between the two surfaces! Those. It will be wrong if you apply a fairly thick layer of thermal paste, and as a result the cooler will “sit” on this layer of thermal paste, and not on the processor itself, tightly adjacent to it.

    It is important that the cooler and radiator are securely fixed above the processor, fit very tightly to it and do not dangle! Otherwise, no normal cooling will result from this...

    After you completely clean the computer from dust and change the thermal paste, we’ll finish with the hardware (i.e. computer hardware). Subsequent actions will already concern the software shell, which we will now consider.

    Checking the system for viruses. Part of the work to return an old computer that has not been serviced for a long time to higher performance has already been completed. But it is not at all necessary that the previous steps taken will immediately give a tangible result.

    The problem may additionally lie in the operating system itself, and not just in the computer hardware. One of these problems is infection of the system with all sorts of viruses, spyware, and Trojans. If you use a Linux or Mac operating system, then you are not at risk of such deep virus infection. But the same cannot be said about Windows :) At the technical school where I used to work in the IT department, the administration staff’s computers could go unserviced for a year and become infected with viruses to such an extent that it became simply impossible to work on them. Also, home users may not maintain their computer in any way for a long time, which sooner or later will lead to the computer becoming very unstable, some visible symptoms of infection appearing, or simply the processor and memory starting to load for no reason.

    The most vulnerable to viruses, if we take the latest Windows systems, was Windows XP. It became infected very easily and working on it without an antivirus was extremely risky. More recent systems - Windows 7, 8 are much less susceptible to infection, even if they are run without using an antivirus. Such systems already have their own defender built in, which, although very weak, can still protect against something.

    So, my point is that you need to check your system for viruses. To do this, you will need an antivirus program in the form of a bootable version. As you know, there are many antiviruses. I briefly talked about some of them, which I tried on myself and considered worthy for protecting a computer, in the article:

    What needs to be done?

    You need to take a bootable (preferably!) version of one of the antiviruses in order to scan the entire computer, not from the most likely already infected Windows system, but even before launching its shell. As a rule, any antivirus has bootable versions and you can download them for free directly from the antivirus’s official website. For example, at Kaspersky, the bootable version of the antivirus is called “KasperskyRescueDisk”:

    Dr.Web has a similar utility called “Dr.WebLiveDisk”:

    If the computer has not been serviced for a very long time, then I recommend checking it for viruses even with any 2 anti-virus products, for example Kaspersky and Doctor Web (whichever you prefer).

    You will need to download the bootable version of the selected antivirus from the official website, then burn it to a disk or flash drive and boot your computer from the recorded disk/flash drive. For information on how to burn a program image to a disk or flash drive, read the article:

    And all that remains is to run a full scan of all your computer hard drives, deleting all the crap found from the computer upon completion :)

    System optimization (registry cleaning, unnecessary garbage, error correction). After the system has been scanned for viruses and all threats have been removed from the computer, it’s time to start cleaning it from a software point of view.

    To optimize the system, I will immediately adjust a number of actions aimed at increasing the performance of your computer, and more specifically, Windows. And these are the actions:

    • Cleaning the system of garbage - removing unnecessary folders, files, old updates, restore points and other things;

      Cleaning the registry of irrelevant entries and compressing it;

      Checking hard drives for errors and correcting them;

      Defragmentation of hard drive partitions.

    All these steps should be taken in order to improve the performance of your system!

    I talked more about optimizing the system and ways to increase its performance in a separate article:

    What exactly do you need to do?

    You need to install one of the programs to optimize the system. To do this, you can use the article above, or install something that you know about yourself. There are many programs for system optimization, including both paid and free ones, but the functionality in each program is approximately the same. It may differ only in the presence of some additional functions. I personally found the largest range of useful functions in the AVGPCTuneUp program, which, unfortunately, is paid. But there is a 30-day trial period, which will be more than enough for you :)

    After you install the program, use it to clean the registry, compress the registry (if any), clear the system of unnecessary files and folders, clean browsers, shortcuts, system cache and various programs, restore checkpoints, check all hard drive partitions for errors, defragmentation of hard disk partitions (those indicated by the program). Some functions may not be in one single program, but in this case, just install 2, since after cleaning the system I still recommend removing them.

    After taking steps to optimize the system, you will most likely improve the quality of its operation and this is usually noticeable immediately after a reboot! Well, of course, it will only be noticeable if Windows was seriously cluttered and the hard drives were already filled with errors.

With this, I have listed, perhaps, all the points that will help return your system to normal life. If suddenly you thoroughly cleaned the inside of the computer from dust, replaced the thermal paste, destroyed all the viruses, carried out a complete optimization of the system, and as a result did not notice any tangible effect in the form of an increase in performance, then all that remains to try is to reinstall Windows.

Sometimes the system may simply be in a terrible state and no optimizers can help, no matter how hard you try. In this case, rather than fiddling around for a very long time, it is easier to reinstall the system from scratch. At the same time, do not forget to copy somewhere all your documents, photos, videos and, in general, everything that should never be lost! To copy the data I need, I usually use large-capacity external hard drives (1-2 TB), which are connected to the computer via USB. It is also possible to use online storages for this purpose, such as Yandex Disk, Google Drive and others. The main thing is that you have enough space in your account.

Read more about what online storage is in a separate article:

Once all your important data has been copied somewhere, perform a clean reinstall of the system. Clean means not updating, but reinstalling from scratch, formatting all hard drives!

Probably, everything will be much faster on the newly installed system... After all, you will completely clean all the hard drives and the system will be like new. However, you will have to reinstall all the programs you need, customize everything again and copy all your files and folders back (from the place where you saved them). But all this is the last step that should be performed if all the previous methods of increasing the performance of your old computer did not help.

Well, if neither cleaning dust, replacing thermal paste, nor subsequently reinstalling the system with a new one helps you, then the situation is apparently completely hopeless and means that it’s time to replace the computer with a new one... If you want to work in comfort, then, of course, it’s worth it , allocate about 15,000 rubles for this matter and buy yourself a brand new computer for office tasks.

That's all. I hope that my tips will help beginners return their old computers that have not been maintained for a long time to a higher speed :)

Thank you all for your attention! Have a nice day, good mood! See you in touch;)

One day we are faced with the need to do something with outdated and no longer needed computer equipment. Throw it away? Sell? Use the leftovers on a designer watch or keychain? This will be discussed further.

Indeed, the desire to “sell” usually collides with laziness: from a reluctance to simply monitor prices to a phobia of communicating with strangers on the phone. And in order to throw it away, you still need to get to the right place! Not to mention that most electrical equipment must be disposed of properly.

Sell as is

The first thing that comes to mind is sales. If your equipment was kept in good condition, the desktop was periodically cleaned or ventilated, then all this can be sold for almost the same price that this filling now costs. It’s easy to find out: just look at a public announcement site like Avito and estimate the average price in your city, and then try to sell it a little cheaper (even reducing the price tag by 50-100 rubles can bring a profit).

It is not worth selling to repair shops and pawn shops, since it is less profitable. As a rule, the latter usually charge at half price, while the former know perfectly well how much they will sell something for and will try to convince you that you will not sell your pieces of iron for more than they would. It is clear that independent sale is preferable to such “intermediaries”.

For parts

You can try to sell partially failed equipment for spare parts - and again with the help of advertisements.

How do you know which old hardware can be sold for spare parts? Suppose your video card burns out, and it’s a pity to throw it away: but if you look, it has an excellent heatsink. You can sell it exactly at its price, since craftsmen who can adapt the old to the new are found in abundance.

And in an old dusty case, usually all or almost all the buttons work: they cleaned the dust, wiped the metal parts with alcohol - and off to sale. In short, you can even sell self-tanning in Africa if you want.

Do it yourself

Here it is appropriate to talk about various exotic uses of spare parts. But here you need to use not the most crooked hands: for example, you can make an aquarium from a desktop case or an old CRT monitor. Of course, it is worth remembering that you will most likely have to cut the glass of the required size yourself, and also pay attention to the fact that the body does not turn out to be harmful plastic that will literally strangle the poor fish.

In addition, you can make a wall clock from a CD (and use keyboard buttons as numbers), a drawn cat with a tail from a mouse, rings from buttons, earrings and other jewelry from capacitors. And this is not to mention the well-known key fobs made from processors.

In general, there is room for imagination to unfold, if only the necessary components were at hand.

Server or multimedia center

Oddly enough, a functional PC no older than 15 years old can handle playing regular MP3s just fine. It is enough to add a capacious hard drive to it (but be sure to check whether the BIOS will handle such volumes!) and run cables for speakers.

By the way, in ancient times, sound solutions built into the motherboard were very far from even very cheap external ones, so it makes sense to get some kind of cheap PCI or ISA sound card.

As for playing movies, this is exactly what the old computer is no longer suitable for. Unfortunately for them, modern films in Full HD quality require serious power from both the processor and video card, and a 15-year-old “old man” simply cannot cope with this.

But the old computer can be used as a file or web server on which your website and your own mail server will run.

Nostalgia for the past

In fact, you can easily buy old computers from the 1990s yourself - they cost next to nothing today. And it will be a fully functional good old DX4-66 with a two-speed CD-ROM and a functioning 14- or 15-inch CRT monitor (and if you’re lucky, even with a “shield that protects against radiation”).

However, you can even buy this “pickup” if you’re lucky. But no, you won’t be able to sell it at a high price, and don’t even dream about it: such rarities have not yet fully become so: perhaps in ten years this will be the case, but not today.

In principle, you can try to sell an ancient PC (and the Mac will be torn off immediately) under the guise of “Retro from the middle of the last century”: the key to success is the correct presentation of your product.

And if you yourself want to buy something similar for yourself, then you’ve got the cards: from such a rare computer you can make a machine for old games, put Full Throttle, Duke Nukem 3D or some fighting game on it. Nostalgic for King's Quest 3, Leisure Suit Larry 5 or the Gabriel Knight trilogy? No problem: the old 386/486 will handle them with ease and will completely immerse you in the atmosphere of childhood.

And you don’t have to buy a desktop: if you have money, you can spend it on a laptop from those times, which have now reached the level of a “rarity” and cost quite a lot. But they will take up less space. Do you also remember how to use the trackball?

Work and leisure time for every user turns into a headache when his old computer is not able to work with a new operating system or updated software, including games. In fact, there is nothing wrong with this, and there are many ways to correct the current situation. True, this will require a small investment. From this article, the user will learn about many ways to make an outdated electronic friend work faster.

Secrets that the processor hides

Firstly, we are talking about crystals that have an unlocked multiplier, otherwise it is unlikely that anyone will be able to increase the core performance. Any Windows operating system for older computers, be it version 7, 8 or 10, requires a processor speed of at least 2 GHz for single-core systems and 1.2 GHz for chips with multiple cores. Therefore, you need to focus on these indicators.

It is better to start overclocking the processor from the BIOS interface, because it has ready-made and free equipment. By going to the “Power BIOS Features” tab and finding the “CPU Configuration” menu, you can step by step increase the processor frequency “CPU CLOCK”. You need to start small - 33 MHz in one step is a serious increase for any processor. You can also play with a multiplier (if its menu is active). Naturally, this parameter needs to be changed step by step (one unit).

There are also many overclocking utilities. They can be found on the motherboard manufacturer's website. However, their effectiveness is often reduced to zero due to the inability to determine the installed processor, because, by the manufacturer’s standards, the crystal is obsolete and is not supported by software.

RAM capacity

Many online publications note that two gigabytes of RAM are enough to install Windows 7 on an old computer, but few clarify that all this resource is needed only for the stable operation of the system itself. The user has nothing left for his programs and games (even a regular antivirus will not be able to work fully). The PC owner needs to figure out at least 3-4 GB.

You can determine the possibility of improvement programmatically, without disassembling the system unit. You will need a specialized program (AIDA, SiSoft Sandra, etc.). By launching the application and going to the “Summary Information” menu, the user will be able to find out how many RAM slots he has, the number of installed modules, their capacity and the capabilities of the motherboard for the maximum amount of memory support. Based on the data received, the owner will understand whether he has the opportunity to increase the RAM resource.

The weak link of any productivity system

It may seem strange to many, but it is the hard drive that can slow down the operation of any PC, especially if the computer is old. There is only one solution: replace the hard drive with a more powerful device. In most cases, judging by numerous user reviews, the problem is solved by installing an SSD drive.

However, to install a solid-state drive, you need to worry about connectivity, because the device operates via the SATA II/III interface. If your old computer only has an IDE connector, then you can forget about the upgrade. Many experts claim that old-style motherboards have a PCIex1 slot, but a drive with such an interface is comparable in cost to that of a new computer. By the way, when disassembling the case you need to be extremely careful and remember what is connected where, otherwise the owner will have a new problem - how to reconnect the old computer so that it works. Many inexperienced users forget about this.

Software part

In addition to the hardware, the problem with system braking can be solved without replacing computer parts. Very often, users complain about the slow operation of programs for surfing the Internet or when communicating on social networks. There are actually a lot of such requests, and only a browser for older computers can solve the problem. The applications QtWeb, BrowZar and K-Meleon have proven themselves well.

The only negative that is often found in user reviews is the lack of forms for saving passwords. As a result, every time a person enters a social networking page, a person must constantly enter a login and password. But it’s still better to work comfortably than to wait several minutes for each page to update.

Caching issues

Sometimes, in order for the browser to work more efficiently on older computers, you also need to disable indexing of hard drives. It's easy to do:

  • open “My Computer”;
  • place the cursor on the system drive (default “C”);
  • press the alternative mouse button (right for right-handers);
  • select “Properties”;
  • at the bottom of the window that opens, uncheck the box next to the inscription: “Allow indexing”;
  • Click the “OK” button.

On slow computers, the procedure for canceling indexing may take more than one hour, but the result after disabling the function will be noticeable immediately. Also, to improve the performance of the hard drive, it is recommended to constantly clean the system of unnecessary files - drive “C” should have a lot of free space (a fifth of the total capacity exactly). Defragmentation, which can be done using the same menu where media indexing was disabled, will not hurt the user. The “Service” tab contains a useful function.

System unit power problems

Often when upgrading a system, especially when adding new components, the old ones are not able to supply the required voltage. The best option for the owner would be to purchase a more powerful power supply, but sometimes the problem is solved in a slightly different way. Unused components can be connected to power: a cooling system fan, an FDD magnetic drive, a non-working CD-ROM, a sound card, a TV-Tuner - anything.

Naturally, the user has to decide which component he needs to get rid of. The FDD drive has fallen out of favor in the last decade; it needs to be disconnected first. With additional fans in the case, if you do not want to turn them off, you can do it differently: switch the cooler consumption from 12 to 5 Volts. This is easy to do: the red cable from the fan must be installed in the terminal opposite the red wire of the connector coming from the power supply (by default, contact is made with the yellow cable).

Is everything really bad?

Many owners, when thinking about where to sell their old computer, miss one interesting feature - the cost of working elements for old PCs, even used ones, on the secondary market is quite high (for example, for old-style RAM, many sellers ask the same amount , how much does a modern one cost). This is the main feature of the secondary market, because many owners find it easier to purchase one spare part rather than spend money on purchasing an entire system unit.

Therefore, before giving away your obsolete PC for next to nothing, many professionals recommend reading advertisements in the media (section “Buy”). Perhaps you will be able to profitably sell your “iron friend” in parts. Of great value is a motherboard with an installed processor, RAM, a discrete AGP video adapter and a hard drive with an IDE interface. Naturally, all of the listed elements must be in working order.

Specialized companies

If a user is interested in where to donate an old computer, then the recommendations include a specialized workshop or a similar store, of which there are countless numbers in every city in our country. However, before going to such a company, the owner needs to know some of the features of such organizations.

  1. If we are only talking about selling an old computer, then you should not count on a large sum. In fact, such a solution will be completely unprofitable for the user.
  2. In workshops that improve weak computers, things are better. The user will have a more efficient part installed, minus the cost of the old one. Sometimes workshops offer the same used spare parts. You should not refuse if the seller gives a guarantee for at least 1 month.
  3. There are also organizations that take spare parts for sale (thrift stores). Out of ignorance (or unwillingness to read the contract), many owners simply donate their old computer to the company. After all, the user has to pay for renting a shelf in such stores, and the cost is removed from the price of spare parts.

can not be

There is no point in sending a PC that is not of interest even to specialized organizations to a landfill, because there are many interesting solutions that suggest what to do with an old computer. First of all, the steel case of the system unit (without spare parts) is actively used by the owners as a home grill (you can even fix the pot). There are few valuable materials in the block, but it will be possible to collect 200-300 grams of aluminum or copper. Work fans can also be used in everyday life. You can come up with anything: an aquarium, a terrarium, a cage for rodents, a bedside table - there are many options.

Finally

If the computer is old, this is not a death sentence, but rather the emergence of a new and interesting hobby, which many owners lack in their lives. If only you had some imagination, everyone could find a use for their favorite PC without outside help. It is better, of course, that the computer does not break down and is always in working order. The main thing is that the reader understands that there are no hopeless situations.

Gold is present in many elements of the motherboard: IDE connectors, PCI Express, PCI, AGP, ISA and other ports, jumpers, processor socket and DIMM slots (SIMM on older motherboards). All these connectors are often coated with a thin layer of gold several microns thick.

To carry out experiments, you need a large number of contacts - our “donor” motherboards provided them.

Chemical reagents and tools are also needed.

After the gold has been separated from the contacts, the bath must be allowed to settle. You should then remove as much of the sulfuric acid as possible, after which you can begin to dissolve the residue at the bottom of the electrolytic cell.

We have a solution of sulfuric acid, various metals (including gold) and waste that needs to be filtered. Why not filter the acid directly, without diluting it? Simply because paper filters cannot withstand concentrated sulfuric acid.

A mixture of different metals and waste will remain in the filter. Now we will dissolve all this in a mixture of 35% hydrochloric acid and 5% chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite), in a 2:1 ratio. 2 HCl + NaClO -> Cl2 + NaCl + H2O

In fact, we will use the chlorine released as a result of mixing hydrochloric acid and chlorine bleach to dissolve gold in the form of gold chloride III.2 Au + 3 Cl2 -> 2 AuCl3

Now we need to filter again. The filter will retain all waste, leaving only the gold chloride solution III.

To obtain metallic gold, we need to precipitate it in solution. For this purpose we will use powdered sodium metabisulfite. In the presence of water, sodium metabisulfite gives sodium bisulfite. Na2S2O2 + H2O -> 2 NaHSO3 It is sodium bisulfite that will allow us to precipitate gold. 3 NaHSO3 + 2 AuCl3 + 3 H2O -> 3 NaHSO4 + 6 HCl + 2 Au

We need to let the solution settle, after which we will get a gray powder at the bottom of the beaker. Don't lose a single grain - it's metallic gold!

As a result, we got a nice golden pellet! Can our process be called economically justified? Definitely not. It only makes sense on an industrial scale. The small gold pellet we received is worth only two or three dollars at today's prices. And, frankly, the companies that extract gold from old computers use other technologies and chemicals that are even more dangerous. But, you see, it’s still interesting to know that you can get gold from your motherboard at home. You can also get gold from expansion cards, processors and chipsets.

If you decide to buy a new computer or it is broken and cannot be repaired, and you do not know where to put it, this article is for you. Adapting an unnecessary processor and monitor requires a little imagination and effort. Let's look at some options for transforming old iron.

Brazier from the body

To build a barbecue, it is enough to separate the side panel of the system unit and take out the insides. This grill is great for barbecues in the country and is very functional. You can put not only skewers on it, but also a bowl for fish soup. It is also easy to place a barbecue grill on it.

To transform the monitor into an aquarium, you need to remove all the components from it, leaving only the plastic case. Place a glass aquarium in it. The monitor can be left in its usual form or decorated with stones, rhinestones, and sequins. Such an element of interior decor will express the originality and extraordinary thinking of the owner.

For the monitor house you only need a plastic case. Its filling depends on what kind of animal will live in it. For a hamster, it is filled with dry grass or sawdust; instead of a screen, a metal mesh is stretched in the form of a door. If the monitor will serve as a bed for a cat, the inside is covered with soft fabric and a mattress is placed on the bottom.

A sharpening machine requires a hard drive chip, a part with disks, a motor and a read head, and sandpaper. Sandpaper is cut to the diameter of the disk, fixed with glue and connected to the motor. When using such a device, do not press the knives too hard against the disk.

For original clocks with a pendulum, the motherboard and hard drive are removed from the system unit. The clock mechanism is attached to the textolite and the numbers for the dial are glued. A hard disk is used as a pendulum, which is mounted on a long perch. Such wall clocks will not go unnoticed by guests.

This is a convenient compact thing that allows you not to clutter up your computer with thousands of photos from your mother-in-law’s birthday or New Year’s corporate party. A data storage server can be designed in the form of a fairy-tale casket by placing the hard drive of an unnecessary computer in a wooden openwork box. On the back side of the casket, make holes for the output of wires for connecting to a PC.

This accessory will become a unique item, making the image of its owner unique. Keys can be matched with letters that form a word. To assemble the bracelet you will need fishing line, keys and an awl. Using a hot awl, holes are made on both sides of the keys and they are threaded onto a fishing line, connecting its free edges.

For earrings you will need keys and fastenings for them. You can select buttons with first and last name initials. A hole is made in the upper part of the button into which the metal hooks of the earrings are inserted. Such decoration will definitely attract attention and admiring glances to their owner.

The ego can be used as an element of interior decor or to play a joke on a work colleague. To create such a lawn, you need to disassemble the keyboard, lay out a layer of cotton wool, and place grass seeds on it. It is necessary to water such a lawn in the morning and evening, and within two days the first sprouts will be visible.

An original mailbox will delight all neighbors and highlight the imagination of its owner. The old system unit must be freed from internal contents and the drive must be removed. The hole from it will serve as a place for immersing correspondence. This structure needs to be secured to a post and installed near the house. For a more attractive look, the box can be painted in a bright color and written with a cheerful inscription.

To do this, you need to remove the processor, motherboard, and video card from the old computer and connect them to the TV.

Get gold

Gold is contained in small contact elements of the motherboard. You can extract it from there using chemical reagents. To do this, they are removed from the board and a series of chemical procedures are carried out. It is worth noting that you can get very little gold, and the procedure itself is very dangerous.

For such an invention, you need to purchase a TV tuner, connect it to your PC and install a suitable operating system.

To use the cooler on hot days, you need to disconnect it from the system unit, leaving the red and black wires, install it on a stand and connect it to the trigger mechanism with a motor.

To make a hanging shelf, you need to unscrew the side panel of the system unit and screw in the loops to attach such an original piece of furniture to the wall. The shelf can be painted in your favorite color.

Such simple transformations will allow you not to throw your old non-working computer into a landfill and find new, original and useful things in everyday life.
