The history of the group began in early 2001. The founders were two old friends - Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz. These two residents of Wilmette, a suburb of Chicago, started playing together in 2001, and they started as a metal project, but very soon became convinced that such a musical direction did not suit them. Much more musicians were inspired by success, after which they took up the development of pop-punk. After that, Joe and Pete were joined by newly graduated vocalist and guitarist Patrick Stump and drummer Andy Hurley.
These four heirs of the glorious traditions of American pop punk, having united in 2001, have already played several concerts, but still could not think of a suitable name. In such cases, you can always turn to the people. Which they did. At one of their concerts in college, the musicians asked their listeners what would be the best name for the band. Someone from the audience shouted: "Fall Out Boy!" The band liked the name, although none of them had any idea where it came from at the time. And it came from the animated series about the Simpson family, where one of the heroes of the comic strip about Radioactive Man was called that.
In 2001, the four recorded and released a demo cassette with three songs on their own, and in 2002 a label was found that agreed to release an album that combined several tracks from Fall Out Boy and Project Rocket, former drummer Andy Hurley's band. The musicians had no particular illusions about themselves, but the effect from the first release and especially from their bright concerts exceeded expectations. When the team returned to the same label in early 2003 to record a new mini-album, it turned out that the situation had changed a lot over the past six months. After the release of Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend mini-album, which received good reviews in the local press, Fall Out Boy had already left the category of dark horses, and managers of several record companies began to actively court the young band. The musicians entrusted the publication of their debut album to the Florida label Fueled by Ramen, founded by Vinnie Fiorello, drummer of the punk band Less Than Jake.
In May 2003, the full-length album Take This to Your Grave appeared in the discography of Fall Out Boy, which appeared in the top 10 of the independent sales rating and became a strong argument for the major label Island Records, which had its eye on the Chicago quartet for a long time, but how - something did not dare to legitimize the relationship. The album "Take This to Your Grave" sounded quite confident and attracted the sympathy of many critics. This solid selection of punk melodies convincingly combined romance and irony, dense guitar riffs and a parody of pop clichés. The musicians have apparently come out of the influence of Green Day, whose music once inspired them to take up punk. Peter Wentz has dubbed Fall Out Boy's sound "softcore", referring to a cross between hardcore and pop punk. A multi-month concert marathon, honestly worked out by the team, introduced the new Chicago formation to the broad punk masses. The masses were satisfied with what they saw and heard.
In May 2004, the band released the acoustic EP "My Heart Will Always Be the B-Side to My Tongue", which included a remake of the Joy Division classic Love Will Tear Us Apart. The release enjoyed notable popularity in the punk commune.
Finally, in May 2005, Fall Out Boy released their second studio album, From Under the Cork Tree, which owes its title to the children's book The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf. It was produced by Neil Evron, who was responsible for the sound of A New Found Glory. Hundreds of concerts worked out over two years and a good promotional campaign guaranteed the team the closest attention to its fresh release, which sold 70,000 copies in the first week and was noted in the Billboard 200, and subsequently received platinum status three times. The explosive single "Sugar, We" re Goin Down "brought the first one hundred percent hit to Fall Out Boy's treasury, conquering the 8th line of the Billboard Hot 100. An excellent video clip played an important role in this, which was actively rotated and won the MTV2 Award at the awards ceremony MTV Video Music Awards in 2005. The second single "Dance, Dance" was not far behind in the charts. Even the organizers of the Grammy did not bypass the four attention, nominating them for the award in the nomination "Best New Artist". Also the song from this album "7 Minutes In Heaven (Atavan Halen)" can be heard in FlatOut 2.
The highlight of Fall Out Boy's 2006 tour schedule was The Black Clouds and Underdogs Tour. Leading it as headliners, they chose several bands as support groups: The All-American Rejects, Hawthorne Heights, From First to Last, The Hush Sound and October Fall. Young teams took turns opening their performances, which took place in dozens of cities in North America and Europe.
Despite a very busy touring schedule in 2006, Fall Out Boy managed to find time to record a new album, the third in a row. The album, called "Infinity on High", was released in February 2007. For production, the Babyface orchestra was invited, which specialized, however, mainly in rhythm and blues and pop artists, as well as rapper Jay-Z. In addition, excellent guitar solos were recorded by Ryan Ross from Panic! At The Disco and Chad Gilbert of A New Found Glory.
In an interview with Billboard weekly, Patrick Stump noted that although the album uses more piano, strings and brass than before, the musicians “tried not to get too carried away with it. After all, it's just four guys playing at the center of these songs - drums, bass and two guitars. It's just rock songs... From song to song, the feeling completely changes, but in context they all make sense. They all have something in common, but in general there are many different voices, perspectives and styles. It would be dishonest if we tried to contain any of these elements.”
The singles "This Ain" t A Scene, It "s An Arms Race" and "Thnks fr th Mmrs" instantly became hits, and the group went on another world tour.
In December 2008, the world saw a new album with the original French title "Folie à Deux", which means "Madness of Two". Critics reacted ambiguously to this album, some siding with "Fall Out Boy - pissed off", while others that "they just got older." No matter how critics think, the opinion of loyal fans has always been considered more, and their verdict - the album was a success. In it everyone will find a song for themselves. And this is good news.
The band spent the beginning of 2009 on tour. Japan, Australia, Europe and all US states. The concerts were sold out, which testifies to the crazy popularity of the group. At the beginning of the summer, Fall Out Boy decided to take a break, but this is unlikely to stop them from creating new hits and conquering new heights.
In November 2009, the band announced the release of the first greatest hits compilation "Believers Never Die - Greatest Hits" with two new songs.
